Lunch at Pelagos, open all winter

The fish tavern on Agia Galini harbour keeps going when the rest of the village closes: Tuesday to Sunday, indoors, with the morning's catch.

A taverna table with fried small fish, fried shrimp, beetroot, cheese pies and a Greek salad

Most of Agia Galini's tavernas close at the end of October. Pelagos does not. The fish tavern on the harbour cooks for the village as much as for visitors, so it keeps its weekly rhythm through the winter: open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, with the tables moved indoors.

The lunch in the photograph: fried small fish with lemon, fried shrimp, beetroot in oil, kalitsounia pies and a salad. In winter the menu adds oven dishes and slow-cooked meat alongside the catch, and on weekend evenings there is usually live music inside.

Eight minutes from the house. Book on winter weekends; the locals do.
